Thimerosal Free Rabies Vaccine?

Oh, If Only…

This is prompted by Michelle’s recent question:

I was told there is a rabies vaccine that is not as harmful as others. Are you able to tell me which one it is, as we are likely going to be required to give it to our dog so we can be a foster family. Thank you!

Her question is really, “Is there a mercury free rabies vaccine?”

A valid question, as mercury is a long known neurotoxin that’s not uncommon in vaccines as a preservative.

The answer revolves around an ingredient called Thimerosal (the mercury containing brand name).

There is a Thimerosal free rabies vaccine available, made by Merck, and called IMRAB 3 TF.

But, we need to look deeper, as is often the case with Big Pharma, whether it be human or veterinary.

Does “TF” really mean a safe, mercury free vaccine for your pets?

It does not.

Hidden mercury, shhh…

It turns out, even those labeled TF (thimerosal free) can still contain mercury in an ingredient class the manufacturers call “excipients.”

These are proprietary ingredients, and they don’t have to be spelled out for the consumer, because, well, capitalism!

If the competition found out what your excipient soup was, how can you hope to compete?

So, odds are, even the TF versions of rabies vaccine will have mercury, hidden deep in their excipients.

A Bit Safer?

Is using a TF rabies vaccine safer than one with Thimerosal?

<cough, throat clearing…> Maybe.

Hard to say with certainty, but maybe there’s less poison in the TF vaccine than those who can’t make that claim.

A Far More Important Question

What most of you should be asking instead of nit picking less or more mercury is really this:

Does my animal NEED a Rabies Vaccine?

I’m going to help you answer that all important question, but there’s really no one size fits all answer (as is often the case with biology).
